Understanding Tons and Pounds

A ton and a pound are both units of weight or mass, but they're used in different contexts and represent vastly different amounts. There are actually different types of tons:

• Short ton (US ton) = 2,000 pounds
• Long ton (Imperial ton) = 2,240 pounds
• Metric ton (tonne) = 2,204.6 pounds

For this converter, we're using the standard US ton (short ton), which is most commonly used in the United States.

How to Convert Tons to Pounds

To convert tons to pounds, multiply the number of tons by 2,000:

Pounds = Tons × 2,000

Example:

Let's convert 3.5 tons to pounds:

• 3.5 tons × 2,000 = 7,000 pounds

To convert pounds to tons:

Divide the number of pounds by 2,000:

Tons = Pounds ÷ 2,000

Example:

Let's convert 5,000 pounds to tons:

• 5,000 pounds ÷ 2,000 = 2.5 tons
