Salary to Hourly Calculator
Your salary and the hours you actually work.
What an hour of your time is actually worth
Divide the salary by the hours you genuinely work, and the answer is often uncomfortable — particularly for salaried roles where the contract says 37.5 and the job says considerably more.
Unpaid overtime is a pay cut, and it compounds
A salary does not change when you work longer; only the divisor does. Five extra unpaid hours a week on a 37.5-hour contract is a real reduction of about 12 % in your effective rate. Ten extra hours is over 20 %.
The calculator shows this above: the third step recalculates your rate with five hours added, which is usually the most persuasive number on the page.
Put the true hours in, not the contracted ones
Count what you actually do: early starts, evenings, the thing you finish at the weekend, the calls on holiday. If you want the comparison to mean anything, be honest about it.
Comparing two jobs properly
A higher salary with longer hours can easily be worth less per hour than a lower one. Work out both rates before deciding, and then factor in the things that are not pay at all:
- Commute time, which is unpaid working time. An hour each way is ten hours a week.
- Pension contributions, which can differ by several per cent of salary.
- Holiday allowance — five extra days is roughly 2 % of your time.
- Whether the hours are predictable, which affects your life more than most salary differences.
The figure is gross
Tax and other deductions come off this. Take-home is commonly 25–35 % lower depending on where you live, so if you are comparing to a cash figure in your hand, this is not it.
Common uses
- Deciding whether overtime is worth it.
- Comparing two offers with different hours.
- Setting a freelance rate from your current salary.
- Deciding whether to pay someone for a job rather than doing it yourself.
The working, step by step
Questions people ask
How do I work out my hourly rate from a salary?
Divide the yearly salary by your weekly hours multiplied by the number of weeks you work.
Should I use contracted or actual hours?
Actual, if you want a meaningful number. Contracted hours tell you what you are supposed to work, not what your time is really worth.
How much does unpaid overtime cost me?
Five extra hours a week on a 37.5-hour contract cuts your effective rate by about 12 %. Ten hours cuts it by over 20 %.
Is this before or after tax?
Before. Take-home is commonly 25–35 % lower depending on where you live.
Should I count my commute?
It is unpaid time the job requires, so it is worth including when comparing two offers even if it does not belong in the headline figure.
This is arithmetic, not advice
Everything here is a calculation you could do on paper. It does not know your circumstances, your tax position, your other commitments or what else is going on in your life, and it is not regulated financial advice.
Real decisions involve things no calculator holds: fees, penalties, tax treatment, how secure your income is, what happens if rates move, and what you would do if something went wrong. For anything significant, talk to a qualified adviser who can see the whole picture.
Use these to understand the shape of a number and to check one you have been given.
Nothing you type is sent anywhere
The figures stay in the page. There is no server behind this site to receive them, nothing is logged, and nothing is stored. That matters more here than on most pages: your salary, your debts and your savings are nobody else's business. The about page lists every request the site makes, read live from your own browser.
