Hitting space as fast as you can

Space-bar speed is a different skill from mouse clicking, and most people score differently on the two. The space bar is large, takes a whole thumb or the side of a hand, and has a longer travel than a mouse button — so the technique that works is usually alternating hands or fingers rather than tapping with one.

Rough bands

  • 4–6 presses per second — normal tapping with one thumb
  • 6–9 — alternating two fingers or two thumbs
  • 9–12 — practised alternating technique
  • Above 12 — usually the keyboard's auto-repeat rather than you

That last point is why this tool ignores auto-repeat. Holding the space bar down makes the operating system send a stream of repeated presses, which would inflate the score meaninglessly. Only genuine new presses are counted.

Where the keyboard limits you

A key has to travel back up past its actuation point before it can register again. On a membrane keyboard that reset takes longer than on most mechanical switches, which is why the same person scores differently on different boards. It is the keyboard as much as the finger.

How to use it

  1. Pick a length. Five seconds is the usual benchmark; sixty tests stamina rather than burst speed.
  2. Press space to start. The timer begins on your first press.
  3. Keep going until the timer runs out. Holding the key down does not help — auto-repeat is ignored.
  4. Try alternating fingers if you are stuck around six per second. It is the single biggest improvement available.

Common uses and tips

  • Games that use space for an action, where press rate matters directly.
  • Comparing keyboards. A board with a fast key reset will score noticeably higher for the same person.
  • Checking a sticky space bar. If your count lags behind your presses, the key is not resetting cleanly — often crumbs under the stabiliser.
  • Stop if your hand hurts. Rapid repetitive pressing causes real strain, and no score is worth it.

What this tool can and cannot see

Everything here runs in your browser. Nothing about your keyboard, mouse or keystrokes is sent anywhere, stored, or logged — the page has no server to send it to.

What the browser gives a web page is also limited by design. It can see that a key was pressed and which one, but not what kind of switch it uses, its firmware, or anything about the device beyond what the operating system reports. A web page cannot tell a mechanical keyboard from a membrane one.

Questions people ask

What is a good space-bar speed?

Four to six presses a second with one thumb is normal. Alternating fingers gets most people to eight or nine.

Does holding the space bar count?

No. Auto-repeat is ignored, so only genuine new presses are counted.

Why do I score differently on another keyboard?

Because a key must travel back past its actuation point before it can register again, and that reset time differs between switch types.

My space bar misses presses.

Either you are outrunning the key's reset, or something is under it. Space bars collect debris around their stabilisers more than other keys.
